Frequently Asked Questions

The Erg Derby uses a parimutuel betting system. All bets on a race go into a shared pool. Vesper retains a 20% house commission from the pool, and the remaining 80% is divided among the winners based on how much was bet on each stable.

Your payout is calculated as: your bet × (80% of total pool / amount bet on winning stable).

Odds are live and change as bets come in. The payout ratio for each stable is: 80% of total pool / amount on that stable. The displayed odds already account for the 20% house commission.

A stable with fewer bets will have higher odds (bigger potential payout). A popular stable will have lower odds. The odds you see when you place your bet may shift before the race closes.

Use the personal access link that was emailed to you. Once logged in, navigate to a race with "OPEN" status, select a stable, enter your wager amount, and confirm.

You can edit or cancel your bet at any time while the race remains open.

Payouts are calculated automatically once the race administrator finalizes the results and selects the winning stable. You can view your payout on the "My Bets" page.

Vesper retains a 20% commission from every race pool. This means winners split 80% of the total pool, not the full amount. The commission supports Vesper Boat Club operations.

Example: If a race has $1,000 in total bets, $200 goes to Vesper and $800 is split among the winners. If you bet $100 on the winning stable that had $400 total bet on it, your payout would be: $100 × ($800 / $400) = $200.

Bets can only be placed while a race is open. Once the administrator closes betting, no changes can be made. Each race has a set of participating stables and you pick one per bet (you can place multiple bets on different stables in the same race).

All wager amounts must be positive. There is no maximum bet limit.

About

The Vesper Erg Derby

The Erg Derby is Vesper Boat Club's premier indoor rowing competition and betting event. Rowers are organized into stables, each competing across multiple race formats on the ergometer.

Spectators and club members can place wagers on their favorite stables using a parimutuel betting system, where odds are determined by the pool of bets placed. The more popular the pick, the lower the payout — and the longshots pay big.

Vesper Boat Club

Founded in 1865, Vesper Boat Club is one of the oldest and most accomplished rowing clubs in the United States, located on Philadelphia's historic Boathouse Row along the Schuylkill River.
